Senators Stabenow, Peters Announce over $21 Million in Funding for the Michigan Department of TransportationWednesday, August 12, 2020
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow (MI) and Gary Peters (MI) today announced that 7 communities across Michigan will receive $21,085,600 in funding from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). This funding comes from the FTA’s Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program to replace, renovate and purchase buses, equipment and bus-related facilities.
Leelanau and Grant Traverse Counties will receive $13,380,000 to construct a new headquarters and transfer station for the Bay Area Transportation Authority (BATA).
The Battle Creek Transit will receive $5,340,000 to purchase buses to replace aging vehicles that have exceeded their useful life.
The City of Big Rapids, Gladwin County, Ogemaw County, and Roscommon County will receive $2,365,600 to rehabilitate bus facilities and expand projects for four rural transit providers.
“The leadership and employees in these communities work hard to make sure that people can get to their jobs, doctor appointments, and grocery stores,” said Senator Stabenow. “This funding will make sure that they’re able to continue to provide these vital services for our communities during this pandemic and into the future.”
“Whether it’s to go to work or pick up prescription medication or buy essentials like groceries, Michiganders need reliable public transit now more than ever,” said Senator Peters, a member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. “This federal grant will help support construction of transportation facilities to improve services in our rural communities as well as provide critical resources needed to respond and recover during this challenging time.”
The FTA’s Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Programs provides funding to replace, renovate and purchase buses, equipment and bus-related facilities in communities across the country. Resources are provided through formula allocations and competitive grants. More information about Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Programs can be found at https://www.transit.dot.gov/bus-program.
