Senator Stabenow Applauds Reopening of Fort Gratiot Lighthouse

Friday, May 18

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow today applauded the reopening of the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse to the public this Saturday. The Fort Gratiot Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Michigan and the second oldest on the Great Lakes.

"It is terrific that families and visitors to Port Huron will once again be able to enjoy our state's very first lighthouse-an important symbol of Michigan's maritime history. Fort Gratiot Lighthouse and Michigan lighthouses all along our coastal shores help fuel the tourism economy of our coastal communities. Today's reopening is an important step in preserving this national treasure for generations to come."

Senator Stabenow has been instrumental in preserving the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, securing funding for critical restoration repairs. She authored the bipartisan Michigan Lighthouse and Maritime Heritage Act to create partnerships to restore lighthouses in Michigan and promote the maritime heritage of the Great Lakes. The bill became law in 2006.
