Senator Stabenow Statement on Department of Energy Comments Regarding MSU

Wednesday, Jan 11

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow today issued the following statement after reports that the Department of Energy might be breaking previous commitments to Michigan State University's (MSU) Facility for Rare Isotope Beams.

"Michigan State is set to break ground on what will be a state-of-art, world class facility.  Thousands of construction and cutting-edge technology jobs are ready to be created this year.  MSU and the State of Michigan have already begun investing in this new facility based on bipartisan commitments to support the project and it would be absolutely unacceptable if the rug was pulled out from under them now."

According to MSU, this project is expected to create 5,783 temporary jobs in Michigan during construction (791 direct construction jobs, 4,992 direct materials and indirect construction jobs).  After the project is completed it will employ 400 full-time jobs (120 positions at the facility, 280 indirect jobs), provide the state with $187 million in state tax revenues, and create over $1 billion of economic activity.
