Internship Opportunities

Interning in a United States Senator's office is a wonderful educational opportunity to learn more about our American government and the legislative process. Senator Stabenow welcomes interns in her Washington DC office. Senator Stabenow looks forward to giving interns the opportunity to expand their knowledge of our nation's history, while experiencing government service first-hand.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

Intern responsibilities vary greatly and range from assisting with administrative and office duties to working with the press, legislative or constituent services staff. Specific tasks might include assisting with phones, researching an issue, drafting a letter, assisting with office operations (eg. faxing, filing, copying, data entry or mailings), clipping newspapers or attending meetings or events. Interns are given specific areas of responsibility and as broad a range of experiences as possible; they are expected to assist with all office operations, as needed.

An intern's contributions to the office are important. Punctuality, dependability and a willingness to work hard and pitch-in where needed are all important attributes. Strong computer and writing skills are essential for many intern positions.

Application Process

Internships are volunteer (unpaid) work experiences that provide valuable insight into our government and unique public service opportunities. The number of positions is limited, depending on the number of applicants and available space. Internships in the Washington DC office are competitive because of the number of applicants. Interns must perform services as part of an educational plan and must be appointed on a temporary basis for a total period not exceeding 12 months.
